Coote, Eyre (1726–1783)

Irish general in British India. His victory in 1760 at Wandiwash, followed by the capture of Pondicherry, ended French hopes of supremacy. He returned to India as commander-in-chief in 1779, and several times defeated Hyder Ali, sultan of Mysore.
