Coppée, François-Edouard Joachim

    0.04 sec.

Coppée, François-Edouard Joachim (1842-1908)

French writer and scholar. His numerous collections of poetry contain delightfully lyrical works and display his skill in writing Parisian elegies and idylls. He also wrote plays, and was archivist of the Comédie Française theatre 1878-84 until his election to the French Academy.

His poetry collections include Poèmes modernes/Modern Poems (1869); Olivier (1876), his only long poem; and Poèmes et récits/Poems and Stories (1887). Of his plays, Le Passant/The Passer-By (1869) was well received; but Le Luthier de Crémone/The Instrument Maker of Cremona (1876), Les Jacobites/The Jacobites (1885), and Pour le couronne/For the Crown (1895) are more ambitious metrical dramas.
