Coquimbo

Town in the region of the same name in central Chile, 13 km/8 mi southwest of the regional capital La Serena; population (1996) 71,079. An important industrial centre, it has a railway link. Coquimbo possess a fine, ice-free harbour and it is the winter base of the Chilean Navy. The town is the port capital of Elquí province. Fish-processing factories are located here, and grain, fruit, copper, and iron ore are exported.

A small museum has been built to exhibit the remains of 39 ancient burials of sacrificed humans and llamas, which were uncovered by heavy rains in 1981.
