Coral Gables

City in Dade County, southeastern Florida, USA, on Biscayne Bay, 8 km/5 mi southwest of Miami; population (1990) 40,100. Part of greater Miami, it is a suburban community and has many new office buildings housing headquarters of large Latin American corporations. It is also a resort and the site of some industry, making fibreglass boats, cosmetics, electronic equipment, furniture, and millwork.

A classic planned city, it was built around his family's farm by George E Merrick in 1925, during the Florida land boom.

Coral Gables is the seat of the University of Miami, founded in the same year as the city, and the site of Fairchild Tropical Garden, the Tropical Park racetrack, and the US Hurricane Research Center.
