corda

In music, a term to indicate the string or strings of an instrument, as in una corda or u.c. (‘one string’) directing a pianist to depress the soft pedal, which moves the hammers so that they strike only one or two strings per key instead of the usual three. Tre corde (‘three strings’) or tutte le corde (‘all the strings’) reverses the marking.
