Corigliano, John (1938- )

US composer. His brilliant and romantic extravaganza The Ghosts of Versailles was staged at the New York Metropolitan Opera House in 1991.

He studied with Otto Luening at Columbia University and privately with Paul Creston; and in 1973 began teaching at Lehmann College, New York.

Works

Orchestral

violin sonata (1963), Elegy for orchestra (1966), piano concerto (1968), clarinet concerto (1977), Hallucinations for orchestra (1981), Echoes of Forgotten Rites for orchestra (1982), Symphony (1990).

Stage

incidental music for plays by Sophocles, Molière, and Sheridan; opera The Ghosts of Versailles (1991).

Other

Naked Carmen, arrangement of Bizet for singers, pop and rock groups, synthesizer, and instruments.
