Corinto

Chief Pacific port of Nicaragua, in the department of Chinandega, 100 km/62 mi northwest of Managua; population (1990 est) 12,000. The town is situated on the sandy island of Punto Icaco and was formerly known as Punta Icacos. It is linked to the mainland by road and rail. Corinto is the only port in Nicaragua at which large ships can berth. The town's main industries are sugar refining, coffee processing, hide tanning and timber processing.

More than 60% of Nicaragua's commerce passes through the town. Corinto is connected by rail to the country's major cities of León, Managua, and Granada.

Last November, the Regal Princess cruise line arrived at the Port of Corinto, in Nicaragua.
