Corn Belt

Corn Belt

Agricultural region of North America, south and west of the Great Lakes. This fertile area lies within the states of Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, parts of South Dakota and Nebraska, and a small part of western Ohio, USA, and southwest Ontario, Canada. The agricultural operation in the area integrates corn production and livestock rearing: corn and supplementary crops are intensively produced and fed to the livestock in the region (cattle and pigs). Soybeans are also grown extensively in the area.

The soils are deep and rich in organic material, and the climate, with a five-month growing season, warm nights, hot days, and well-distributed rainfall, is ideal for growing corn.
