Cornaro, Caterina (1454–1510)

Queen of Cyprus 1473–89. A Venetian noblewoman, she married James II, King of Cyprus, in 1472. She was left a widow in 1473 and governed for her son, James III, until his death in 1475. She was persuaded to abdicate in favour of the Venetian republic in 1489.

She retired to the castle of Asolo, near Venice, where she lived until her death, surrounded by poets and artists. Her beauty and wit were renowned, and she was painted by many artists, including Palma Vecchio, Gentile Bellini, and Titian.
