Cornish

Town in Sullivan County, southwestern New Hampshire, USA, along the Connecticut River, north of and adjacent to Claremont; population (1990) 1,700.

Sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens lived and worked here for over 20 years (1885–1907). His home, studios, and gardens are a National Historic Site. US chief justice Salmon P Chase was born here (1808), and after the 1970s the town gained a specialized notoriety as the home of reclusive author J D Salinger.
