carambolaSmall evergreen tree of Southeast Asia. The fruits, called star fruit, are yellowish, about 12 cm/4 in long, with a five-pointed star-shaped cross-section. They can be eaten raw, cooked, or pickled, and are juicily acidic. The juice is also used to remove stains from hands and clothes. (Averrhoa carambola, family Averrhoaceae.)
