Corona Borealis

Small but easily recognizable constellation of the northern hemisphere, between Hercules and Boötes, traditionally identified with the jewelled crown of Ariadne that was cast into the sky by Bacchus in Greek mythology. Its brightest star is Alphecca (or Gemma), which is 78 light years from Earth.

It contains several variable stars. R Coronae Borealis is normally fairly constant in brightness but fades at irregular intervals and stays faint for a variable length of time. T Coronae Borealis is normally faint, but very occasionally blazes up and for a few days may be visible to the naked eye. It is a recurrent nova.
