Coronel Oviedo

Capital of the department of Caaguazú in eastern Paraguay, 125 km/78 mi east of Asunción; population (1996) 60,757. Timber products, cattle, and agricultural produce from the Paraguayan hinterland pass westwards through Coronel Oviedo on their way to Asunción for export.

Situated in the low range of hills of Caaguazú, the city experienced rapid growth from the 1950s onwards, mainly as a result of the construction of a highway running east for over 200 km/124 mi to the international bridge spanning the River Paraná at Puerto Presidente Stroessner.
