Corozal

Farming town on the northeast coast of Belize and chief town of the Corozal district; population (1996) 8,000. It is situated 160 km/99 mi north of Belize and 12 km/7 mi from the Quintana Roo state frontier of Mexico. A wide range of crops is grown here, taking advantage of the fertile soils in the area, and tropical hardwoods are also produced. There are also fisheries. The houses on the seafront are built on stilts.

Corozal was once a centre of the sugar industry. A large part of the old town was destroyed in 1955 by Hurricane Janet.
