Correns, Carl Franz Joseph Erich

    0.07 sec.

Correns, Carl Franz Joseph Erich (1864-1933)

German botanist and geneticist who is credited with rediscovering Mendel's laws (Hugo De Vries is similarly credited).

His work on the role of pollen in influencing characteristics of fruit and seed produced led him to discover ratios like those found by Mendel. He predicted that sex must be inherited in a Mendelian fashion and in 1907 he was able to demonstrate that this was true using experiments on Bryonia.

Correns was born in Berlin and educated at the University of Munich before studying in Berlin and Tübingen. He became assistant professor at Pfeffer's Institute in Leipzig and then professor at Munster 1909, and first director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institut für Biologie in Berlin 1913.
