Cortez

City in the southwestern corner of Colorado, USA, 64 km/40 mi west of Durango; seat of Montezuma County; population (2000) 8,000. Major industries are oil and tourism, although Cortez is also a trade centre in a livestock, fruit, grain, dairying, and timber region. Other industries include metal, food, and animal feed processing and the manufacture of plywood, leather goods, furniture, and industrial gases.

In the 1950s, oil and tourism replaced farming and livestock ranching as the city's major industries.

Cortez is the gateway to Mesa Verde National Park, 14 km/9 mi to the southeast, and is also 56 km/35 mi northeast of the Four Corners.
