Cortina d'Ampezzo

Town in the Dolomites mountain range, in Veneto region, northeast Italy; population (1991) 7,100. As a resort it dates from the 1850s, and skiing here became important around 1900. Its growth was encouraged by hosting the 1956 Winter Olympic Games, and it is now one of the largest winter-sports resorts in Europe.
