Cortissoz, Royal (1869-1948)

US art critic. He was the art critic for the New York Tribune 1891-1944. A classicist by training and nature, he was opposed to modernism, as seen in such publications as Art and Common Sense (1913) and American Artists (1923).

He was born in Brooklyn, New York, and educated locally; he worked for the architectural firm of McKim, Mead, and White.
