Cortland

City in central New York, USA, on the Tioughnioga River, 48 km/30 mi south of Syracuse; seat of Cortland County; population (1990) 19,800. It is at the centre of a rich agricultural area specializing in dairy cattle; regional farms also produce cabbage, potatoes, and grains. The city's industries manufacture clothing, doors, boats, and specialized textiles.

The Smith Corona Corporation, a major employer, moved its typewriter manufacturing facilities to Mexico in the early 1990s. Cortland is home to the State University College at Cortland.
