Corvallis

City in western Oregon, USA, on the Willamette River, 45 km/28 mi south-southwest of Salem; seat of Benton County; population (1990) 44,800. It is a lumber and agricultural processing centre.

At the head of navigation for the river, it was the capital of the Oregon Territory 1846–57. Corvallis is the seat of Oregon State University (1868), the state's oldest public institution of higher learning. This educational base has given rise to many engineering, consulting, and business machine firms.

The William L Finley National Wildlife Refuge, 32 km/20 mi to the south, and the Siuslaw National Forest, which has its headquarters here, are important tourist destinations.
