Corvisart des Marest, Jean Nicolas (1755–1821)

French physician. He was the first to promote clinical medicine in France, and brought the method of percussion as a means of diagnosing heart conditions into general use. He was Napoleon's personal physician.

His Nouvelle Méthode pour reconnaître les maladies internes de la poitrine par la percussion de cette cavité/A New Method for Diagnosis of Diseases of the Chest by Percussion (1808) was a translation of the Austrian physician Leopold Auenbrugger's neglected classic on percussion. Another publication, Essai sur les maladies et les lésions organiques du coeur et des gros vaisseaux/Essay on the Diseases and Organic Lesions of the Heart and Large Vessels (1806), was the leading work on cardiovascular disease in its time.
