Cosenza

Town in Calabria, southern Italy, at the junction of the rivers Crati and Busento, 140 km/87 mi northeast of Reggio di Calabria; population (2001) 73,000. It is an agricultural market centre trading in olive oil, fruit, and cereals. Silk, leather goods, furniture, and pottery are manufactured. There is a cathedral (12th–13th centuries). The town is the capital of Cosenza province.

The old part of the town has steep and narrow streets. Earthquakes have caused widespread damage on six occasions since the 12th century. The cathedral, which has been restored, has a mausoleum containing the heart of Isabella of Aragon, wife of Philip III of France. Alaric, king of the Visigoths, is buried here.
