Cosenza
| Town in Calabria, southern Italy, at the junction of the rivers Crati and Busento, 140 km/87 mi northeast of Reggio di Calabria; population (2001) 73,000. It is an agricultural market centre trading in olive oil, fruit, and cereals. Silk, leather goods, furniture, and pottery are manufactured. There is a cathedral (12th–13th centuries). The town is the capital of Cosenza province. |
| The old part of the town has steep and narrow streets. Earthquakes have caused widespread damage on six occasions since the 12th century. The cathedral, which has been restored, has a mausoleum containing the heart of Isabella of Aragon, wife of Philip III of France. Alaric, king of the Visigoths, is buried here. |
