Coser, Lewis A(lfred) (1913-2003)

German-born US sociologist who emigrated to the USA in 1941. He wrote books in the areas of social conflict, the sociology of politics, and history.

He was born in Berlin, Germany. He gained a PhD from Columbia University; he taught at Brandeis University 1951-68, and State University of New York: Stony Brook 1969-87. His works include Sociological Theory (coauthored, 1957, several times revised), The American Communist Party (with Irving Howe, 1957, later revised), and Refugee Scholars in America (1984).
