Constantine I (1868–1923)

King of the Hellenes (Greece) 1913–17 and 1920–22. He insisted on Greek neutrality in World War I and was forced by the rebel government of Eleuthérios Venizelos and the Allies to give up the throne. He was recalled in 1920 but after a military revolt he abdicated in favour of his son, George II. He married Sophia Dorothea, sister of Emperor William II of Germany, in 1889.

As a military leader Constantine was held responsible for the disastrous Greek campaign to regain Thessaly from the Turks in 1897, but in 1912–13 he was successful against the Turks and Bulgarians in the Balkan Wars and by the end of 1913 his dominions were double those of his father, George I, in area.
