Costa, Claudio-Manoel de

    0.01 sec.

Costa, Claudio-Manoel de (1720-1790)

Brazilian poet. Highly critical of the colonial government of Brazil, he was the anonymous author of the satirical Cartas Chilenas, which attacked the governor. His poem ‘Villa-Rica’ is based on historical subject matter.

Costa was born in Mariana, in the southern region of Minas Gerais. His early work was written in both Portuguese and Italian. He was implicated in political agitation against the authorities in 1789. Imprisoned at Villa Rica, he died in suspicious circumstances, supposedly by poison.
