The Clematis genus of climbing plants includes more than two hundred members distributed across most of the world's temperate regions. They look very effective trained through trellising, entwined with other plants, or along walls like this one at Cotehele, a stately home beside the River Tamar in Cornwall.

Medieval house near Calstock, Cornwall, England, on the west bank of the River Tamar. The house, which is virtually unaltered, was acquired by the National Trust, together with 520 ha/1284 acres, through the Treasury in 1947.

The original furniture, fabrics and armour remain in the house. The estate includes a valley shrub garden with many subtropical plants; Cotehele Quay on a bend of the river, 1 km/0.5 mi below the house; and Morden Mill, the manorial water-mill, are now restored to working order.
