Cotentin

District of northern France, forming part of the département of Manche. Cap de la Hague is on its jagged north coast. Its chief town is Cherbourg. Cotentin has apple orchards and dairy production. It has dockyards at Cherbourg, a nuclear power station at Flamanville, and a nuclear-waste treatment plant at Beaumont-Hague.

In World War II, the Cotentin peninsula was the scene of fierce fighting in the Battle of Normandy in July 1944.
