Cotonou

Chief port and largest city of Benin, on the Bight of Benin; population (2002) 665,100. Palm products and timber are exported, there is a brewing industry, and textiles are manufactured. Although not the official capital, it is the seat of the president, and the main centre of commerce and politics.

Cotonou is located on a lagoonal coast,and was provided with a deep-water port in 1964. The city is the terminus of the Benin–Niger railway and is also the terminus of the main road linking the coast with Kandi in the north, and Niger via the Niger bridge at Gaya. Cotonou is the home of the National University of Benin, founded in 1970. The capital of Benin, Porto Novo, is situated 20 km/12 mi away.

Five experimental huts belonging to the Centre de Recherche Entomologique de Cotonou (CREC) are situated in the village.
