Cotopaxi

Active Andean volcano in north-central Ecuador on the border of the Cotopaxi, Napo, and Pichincha provinces. It is located 48 km/30 mi south of Quito at an altitude of 5,897 m/19,347 ft above sea level. It one of the highest volcanoes in the world. It is now contained within a 340 sq km/131 sq mi national park, established in 1975. A llama-breeding station and a NASA satellite-tracking station are located nearby.

Cotopaxi

Mountainous province in the Andean sierra of north-central Ecuador; area 6,248 sq km/2,412 sq mi; population (1996) 298,046. Latacunga is the provincial capital. The area is watered by the Patate River. The economy is based on cereal, fruit, and vegetable production, dairy farming, and the iron and steel industry.
