CotopaxiActive Andean volcano in north-central Ecuador on the border of the Cotopaxi, Napo, and Pichincha provinces. It is located 48 km/30 mi south of Quito at an altitude of 5,897 m/19,347 ft above sea level. It one of the highest volcanoes in the world. It is now contained within a 340 sq km/131 sq mi national park, established in 1975. A llama-breeding station and a NASA satellite-tracking station are located nearby. |
