Cottbus

Industrial city in the Land (administrative region) of Brandenburg, Germany; population (2005 est) 105,300. Industries include engineering and the manufacture of textiles, carpets, and glassware. Formerly the capital of the East German district of Cottbus 1952–90, the city is the economic and cultural centre of Lower Lusatia and the southeastern gateway to the Spreewald.

Cottbus is a university city and there is a Sorbian (Slav) minority population in the area. Features include the art nouveau Jugendstil Theatre (1908) and an interesting Altmarkt.
