trebuchet

Missile-launching weapon resembling a catapult, with a beam pivoted on an axle and terminating in a sling. It was invented in China between the 5th and 3rd centuries BC, and reached Europe around AD 500. The most powerful trebuchets could launch missiles weighing a tonne or more.
