Council Grove

City in east-central Kansas, USA, on the Neosho River at the edge of the Flint Hills, 37 km/23 mi northwest of Emporia; seat of Morris County; population (1990) 2,200. It is a distribution centre for grain, cattle, and poultry, also processes food, and has some light industry.

It was the site of the 1825 meeting between US commissioners and Osage chiefs that obtained the right of way for the Santa Fe Trail; the ‘Council Oak’ marks the spot. A trading post (from 1847), the settlement grew as an important supply point on the Trail.

The Kaw (Kansa) Methodist Mission (1849) State Historic Site is here.
