Basie, Count (1904–1984)US jazz band leader and pianist. He developed the big-band jazz sound and a simplified, swinging style of music. He led impressive groups of musicians in a career spanning more than 50 years. Basie's compositions include ‘One O'Clock Jump’ (1937) and ‘Jumpin' at the Woodside’ (1938). Basie's solo piano technique was influenced by the style of Fats Waller, his organ teacher in Harlem, New York.

| The gem is the 1966 set with Count Basie, featuring different performances from those released on the landmark ``Sinatra at the Sands'' album. The jazz age of the 1920s and 1930s saw them play and record with leading blackled jazz bands--including those of Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Louis Armstrong (who had taken up the trumpet in a New Orleans orphanage). She never had the benefit of knowing her famous musician father, Preston Love, who played saxophone for such heavy hitters Count Basie, Lucky Millander and Johnny Otis. |
