counter example

Method for disproving a statement by finding an example that is not true. For example, the statement: if x < 4 then x2 < 16, can be proved or disproved by inserting −5 as the value of x. When x = −5, x2 = 25, therefore the statement has been disproved by finding a counter example. Only one counter example is needed to disprove a statement.
