The highest natural male voice, as opposed to the falsetto of the male alto. It was favoured by the Elizabethans for its heroic brilliance of tone.

His uncle is the head violinist in the Vienna Philharmonic, sister Rosie studies classical piano and younger brother Max is one of Australia's emerging counter tenors.
Counter tenor James Bowman and Dr Andrew Gant, organist, choirmaster and composer at Her Majesty's Chapel Royal - along with other members of the Chapel Royal Choir - will join the Avison Ensemble to perform anthems by Handel and Purcell written specially for the Chapel Royal.
The other soloists are counter tenor Charles Humphries and soprano Catrine Kirkman.
