Country Club Plaza

Pioneering suburban shopping centre in Kansas City, Missouri, which was created in 1922-23 by J C Nichols. The Plaza lies 6 km/4 mi south of the city centre, and comprises fifteen blocks of buildings in the Spanish (Moorish) style. The area later attracted institutional buildings, such as the City Art Institute and Music Conservatory, Rockhurst College and the University of Missouri at Kansas City, and the Midwest Research Institute.

Country Club Plaza is situated south of the heart of old Westport and on the northern edge of the Country Club District. This affluent neighbourhood, which was laid out in the 1900s, then marked the far southwestern outskirts of the city. Nowadays, however, Kansas City has expanded south beyond the Plaza, with the largely residential areas of Waldo, Red Bridge, New Santa Fe, and Martin City, while to the south-southeast lie Dodson, Ruskin Heights, Vale, and Knobtown.
