coup de glotte

In singing, a trick whereby vowel sounds are preceded by a kind of click in the throat produced by a momentary cutting off of the breath-stream.

It is effective as an inflection and insisted on as a point of good technique by many singing teachers, while others consider it harmful to the voice.
