Couric, Katie (1957– )

US broadcast journalist. She is best known for co-hosting the popular Today show, where she interviewed political leaders and popular culture icons, covering a range of topical news and human interest stories 1991–2006. A popular television personality, known for her cheerful demeanour and empathetic yet probing interview style, she replaced veteran journalist Dan Rather to become the anchor of CBS Evening News in 2006.

She worked for the US television networks ABC and CNN before joining NBC, where she worked as a reporter in Miami 1984–86 and Washington 1987–89. She joined NBC News as a Pentagon correspondent in 1989. After joining the Today show in 1990, she became co-anchor the following year.

After her husband died of colon cancer in 1998, she became active in promoting colon cancer testing, research, and education.
