Couthon, Georges (1755–1794)

French revolutionary. He became president of the Committee of Public Safety during the French Revolution and helped Robespierre to destroy the partisans of Jacques Hébert and Georges Danton. He was guillotined with Robespierre in 1794.

Originally a lawyer, he became president of the Clermont tribunal in 1789, voted for the death of Louis XVI, and became increasingly radical, siding against the Girondists.
