Couve de Murville, Jacques Maurice (1907–1999)

French politician and diplomat, prime minister 1968–69. He was minister of foreign affairs 1958–68 and succeeded Georges Pompidou as prime minister. He was president of the foreign affairs committee of the National Assembly 1973–81.

He studied at the Sorbonne, Paris, and had a distinguished early career in the French Foreign Office (he was ambassador successively to Italy, Egypt, the USA, and the Federal German Republic).
