Cowal

Mountainous peninsula in Argyll and Bute unitary authority, Scotland, flanked by Loch Fyne to the west, and Loch Long and the Firth of Clyde to the east. The peninsula is bordered to the north by the Arrochar Alps (highest peak Beinn Ime at 1,011 m/3,318 ft), while to the south its tips enclose the upper portion of Bute, an island barely separated from the mainland by the narrow Kyles of Bute. A national forest park covers the northeastern region of the peninsula. The principal town is Dunoon.
