Cowansville

City in Missisquoi County, in the Eastern Townships, southern Québec, Canada, 72 km/45 mi east-southeast of Montréal and 21 km/13 mi north of the Vermont border, on the southern fork of the River Yamaska; population (1991) 12,000. Once primarily agricultural, the city now has a number of manufactures.

A predominantly francophone city, the influence of Cowansville's Loyalist founders (those who remained loyal to Britain in the American Revolution) can be seen in its Victorian architecture.

The city has a Federal penitentiary, an annual puppet festival, and access to skiing and lake resorts.
