Cowpens

Town in Spartanburg County, northwestern South Carolina, USA, in the Piedmont, 16 km/10 mi northeast of Spartanburg; population (1990) 2,200. It is a trade centre.

About 13 km/8 mi north-northwest of the town centre is 342 ha/845 ac Cowpens National Battlefield, scene of a decisive victory by American militiamen under Daniel Morgan over British troops commanded by Banastre Tarleton (17 January 1781).

Regarding Naval interaction, the Indian Navy ships Sharda and Sukanya relieved the USS Cowpens to escort ships through the Straits of Malacca and to protect them against terrorist attacks and pirates on the high seas during Operation Enduring Freedom in April of 2002.
