Cox, Jacob Dolson

Cox, Jacob Dolson (1828–1900)

Canadian-born US politician and soldier . After service in the US Congress 1876–79, Cox was president of the University of Cincinnati 1885–89. He was elected governor of Ohio 1866 and served as secretary of the interior 1869–70 under President Grant.

Born in Montréal, Canada, Cox was raised in New York, USA, and educated at Oberlin College. He served briefly as superintendent of schools in Warren, Ohio. He studied law, was admitted to the Ohio bar 1853, and elected to the state legislature 1859. During the American Civil War 1861–65, Cox was appointed brigadier general of volunteers and saw action in West Virginia and at Antietam.

A great authority on military history, his Military Reminiscences of the Civil War was published posthumously 1900.
