Cox, John (1935– )

English stage director. After studying at Oxford he was assistant director at Glyndebourne, and director of productions 1971–81, with a Richard Strauss series including Arabella, Intermezzo, and Capriccio. He was general administrator of the Scottish Opera 1981–86, and produced the first local staging of Berg's Lulu. He made his New York Metropolitan Opera House debut in 1982, with Il Barbiere di Siviglia/The Barber of Seville, and directed the US premiere of The Midsummer Marriage at San Francisco in 1983. He has also staged Daphne at Munich and Il re pastore/The Shepherd King at Salzburg. He was appointed director of productions at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, in 1988, and has produced Il Viaggio a Reims/The Journey to Rheims and Die Frau ohne Schatten/The Woman Without a Shadow (1992).
