cancrizans

Term used for the device of repeating a musical phrase or theme backwards, note for note. ‘Canon cancrizans’ is a canon in which one part or more proceed normally while another one or more go backwards. In twelve-tone music, the reversed form of the series is sometimes called cancrizans instead of the more usual retrograde.
