Craigavon

City in County Armagh, Northern Ireland; population (2001) 57,700. It was created by integrating Lurgan, Portadown, and various villages and providing a new town centre and new residential and industrial areas. Craigavon was designated a ‘new town’ in 1965. It was named after James Craig (Viscount Craigavon), the first prime minister of Northern Ireland (1921–40).

Administrative region in the centre of Northern Ireland, serving an area in the north of County Armagh; area 282 sq km/109 sq mi; population (2001) 80,700. It is located on the Belfast–Dublin economic corridor. The towns under the council's remit include Craigavon, Portadown, and Lurgan. The principal sources of employment include engineering, the food industry, agriculture, and pharmaceuticals.
