Craigavon

City in County Armagh, Northern Ireland; population (2001) 57,700. It was created by integrating Lurgan, Portadown, and various villages and providing a new town centre and new residential and industrial areas. Craigavon was designated a ‘new town’ in 1965. It was named after James Craig (Viscount Craigavon), the first prime minister of Northern Ireland (1921-40).
